Since the late 1980s, American painter Sue Williams has been exploring power and oppression, gender relations and body politics in her paintings and drawings. In doing so, she consistently pursues a critical feminist agenda in a field long considered the patriarchal domain par excellence, which she brilliantly manipulates using a variety of painterly strategies. The images of Sue Williams unfold their genuine power in the simultaneity of the personal and the political, of humorous caricature, almost shocking explicitness, and painterly gesture. The exhibition at Belvedere 21 comprises works in painting, drawing, and collage from all phases of the artist’s career, from the late 1980s to the present day.
