Julia Gaisbacher’s exhibition examines the urban transformation of the Brutalist housing estate Split 3 in the Croatian city of Split. Designed in the 1960s and 1970s as a socialist model city for 50,000 residents, the neighbourhood today stands as a prime example of the consequences of economic and political upheaval. With the break-up of Yugoslavia and the return of urban open spaces to former owners, the original architectural vision was increasingly undermined – by unplanned new buildings, derelict clearings and informal car parks. Julia Gaisbacher, who grew up in a similar housing estate in Graz, approaches this development through observations of the urban landscape, revealing fractures, transitions and overlaps. Her work demonstrates how socio-political changes are inscribed into the built environment and where the traces of once-utopian ideas become visible under the conditions of capitalist transformation.
