The ‘Sculpture and Plastic Arts’ collection at the Salzburg Museum houses a shrine which, given its classification as ‘furniture’, might also be expected to feature in the decorative arts collection. The “reliquary” from the Bürgerspitalskirche in Salzburg – sometimes also referred to as the “Holy Sepulchre” – is one of the most significant examples of late Gothic furniture in Salzburg, owing to its exceptionally high-quality, elaborate and precious craftsmanship, the rich gilded carvings and the figurative reliefs.
The exhibition curated by Peter Husty at the Bergbau- und Gotikmuseum in Leogang will present, alongside the shrine, a series of significant late-Gothic pieces of furniture from museum and private collections, which document the high quality of the Salzburg pieces and highlight their origins in the Lungau region.
