What we take for granted today was not always the case. In earlier centuries, medical care was often difficult to access in rural areas. The journey to the nearest doctor was long, treatment was barely affordable for many farmers, and the isolation of many rural farms demanded the greatest possible self-reliance. Consequently, the rural population relied on folk medicine knowledge passed down through generations and initially attempted to cure themselves. The exhibition ‘Blühende Medizin’ (Flourishing Medicine) at the Österrreichisches Freilichtmuseum Stübing offers an overview of the development and significance of medicinal plants – from antiquity through the monastery gardens of the Middle Ages to folk medicine and its impact in the modern day. It highlights just how closely people’s lives were once connected to nature – and how much of this ancient knowledge has been preserved to this day and continues to be used.
