A.rtificial I.ntrospection O. (A.I.O.) explores thought, perception and subjectivity at the intersection of self-observation, cybernetics and artificial intelligence. The starting point is the work of the Austrian writer, cognitive psychologist and cyberneticist Oswald Wiener (1935–2021), whose original work has, since the 1950s, moved critically between these fields and systematically eluded institutional appropriation. At the heart of his investigations lies human thought and consciousness, to which Wiener devoted himself throughout his life, outside the mainstream of the scientific establishment, with an unorthodox and inspiring approach. His works articulated, at an early stage, central questions concerning artificial intelligence and the problems of its theoretical and conceptual foundations. For Wiener, consciousness is not organised linguistically and therefore cannot be simulated using current technology. The impact that cybernetic intelligence will have on our daily lives, our bodies and our language remains partly open and can so far only be surmised; in any case, it is and will be considerable. The experimental exhibition A.I.O., curated by Sandro Droschl and Franca Zitta, seeks to make Oswald Wiener’s ideas artistically fruitful and to go beyond them. It explores the relationship between cybernetics and self-observation – and in doing so questions the interaction between human and machine.
