In 2026, SLASH ½ – the small, feisty sister festival of the main event – will once again be causing a stir at the Filmcasino, bringing nine fantastic genre gems to the big screen. Take KINKI, for example. The title is not a reference to the countless creative possibilities for sexual encounters, but rather refers to a region in Japan that lies at the heart of the mystery animating horror master Kôji Shiraishi’s latest work. With the highly bizarre and enormously slime-laden gross-out comedy MUM, I’M ALIEN PREGNANT, the New Zealand directing duo THUNDERLIPS succeed, on the one hand, in continuing the splatstick tradition of Kiwi cinema, significantly shaped by Peter Jackson, and, on the other, in offering a sharp and ambiguous commentary on the odyssey of many women seeking to legally terminate their pregnancies. In SILENCE, hyper-stylist Eduardo Casanova draws on vampire mythology to create a striking allegory about stigmatisation and societal silence, enhanced by precise comedy and a blood-spattered musical interlude: the rampant plague causes discord among four vampire sisters over ethical issues. A good six centuries later, the daughter of one of the four finds herself in the midst of a new pandemic. Two short films by Eduardo Casanova will be screened before SILENCE.
