With its new permanent exhibition, ‘Archaeology’, the Schlossmuseum offers a free tour through the history of Upper Austria from the Neolithic period to the Roman era. Archaeological highlights, current projects and research findings are presented and explained across seven rooms. The exhibition begins in the Treasure Chamber with six extraordinary highlight objects. The second room focuses on archaeological methods. Here, visitors can also see the recently discovered Medusa of Hallstatt, which ranks among the most significant individual finds from Roman antiquity in Upper Austria. A further three rooms are dedicated to a unique feature of Upper Austria: it is the only federal state to boast three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The exhibition highlights the prehistoric pile dwellings, the special significance of Hallstatt and the Danube Limes – three regions of global importance that impressively reflect both the scenic and cultural diversity and the historical depth of Upper Austria. The sixth room is dedicated to Roman Linz, where, among other things, the latest findings from the ‘Lentia/Linz Archaeological Plan’ project are presented. A special exhibition room complements the permanent exhibition with changing themes. The first exhibition is ‘Life and Death on the Danube Limes – The Burial Grounds of Lauriacum/Enns’.
