Wiesauer-Reiterer is one of the few female painters associated with the ‘New Wild Ones’ of the 1980s, a reductionist without belonging to the Neo Geo movement of the 1990s, a material artist without ties to Arte Povera, and a seeker of traces who recognises individual qualities in found materials. Stone, for instance, is a partner in her creative process: Its inherent character serves as a starting point for reinterpretations or new interpretations. The wide range of her technical capabilities justifies Heliane Wiesauer-Reiterer’s designation as a ‘universal artist’. She works as a painter, graphic artist, photographer and sculptor; her formats range from small pieces to monumental works, and her working method can result in large-scale series as well as individual pieces. As one of the leading artists of her generation, she creates visual experiences of extraordinary depth. A generous donation to the Wien Museum now enables a high-calibre overview of her entire oeuvre.
