In their paintings and graphic works, Veronika Hauer and Martina Steckholzer explore the transience of movement and the traces the body leaves in the world. In this exhibition, they present an installation developed for both spaces, in which Hauer’s wall ceramics and watercolours meet Steckholzer’s paintings. Common to both approaches is an interest in gesture and score, which documents the transience of a choreography in new systems of signs that extend beyond the moment of its performance. In a performative installation developed by Veronika Hauer in collaboration with the Australian artist Katie Lee, a careful interplay of ceramic objects and language gives rise to new, unpredictable systems of meaning between performers and audience. In Loose Ends Dance, Steckholzer’s paintings interweave different time periods. Created as dance-like hand gestures, they were initially conceived as temporary works for the gallery’s first room and are therefore ephemeral. In the second room, they respond to the dance movements of Hauer’s displayed bones and capture them abstractly on canvas.
