The 1970s were a remarkable decade – for Graz too. An active urban community fought back against the ever-present city traffic, whilst young people partied in basement discos before the pavements were raised on Sundays. Navigating a balance between crisis and optimism, Graz moved through a decade of new beginnings. What did it mean to break down old structures and establish reforms? What challenges did the residents face, and how did they deal with crises? What was let go, and what was preserved? What continues to have an impact today? Through eleven selected locations, the exhibition tells the story of life in Graz in the 1970s. It offers insights into the urban developments of a city of 250,000 inhabitants that found its place within the Austrian and international landscape.
