In her first solo exhibition in Europe, the Chinese artist Miao Ying draws an unusual analogy between artificial intelligence and the animal kingdom. Like hardly any other technological innovation before it, artificial intelligence is set to fundamentally transform our society. Miao Ying’s remarkable artistic work taps into this collective, incredulous sense of wonder: she brings the technical realities of artificial intelligence into sharp focus whilst simultaneously exploring the deeply human desire to control this new technology. In her most recent works, Miao Ying uses AI-generated digital images, which she creates using generative neural networks within specified parameters and subsequently translates into analogue, painterly formats. In this way, she intertwines digital technologies with traditional image-making, thereby questioning our perception of reality and control. This translation from the digital to the physical lends a concrete form to the often abstract processes of data processing and makes their aesthetics perceptible through the senses. At the same time, the artist draws on cultural metaphors whose origins lie long before the development of modern computer technologies. Allusions to medieval notions of magic, alchemy and incantations suggest that technical innovations are always accompanied by projections, irrational fears and hopes. By combining these historical visual worlds with the latest advances in artificial intelligence, Miao Ying offers a critical yet humorous perspective on a technology whose social implications are only gradually becoming apparent.
