As part of the international conference and exhibition xCoAx 2026 (Computational, Communication, Aesthetics & X) at the Palazzo Madama in Turin, “the Futile Corporation” is presenting the installation *local mean time*, which has been accepted following a peer review. This artistic-scientific project visualises minute temporal differences along a spatial axis and offers a critical reflection on the societal consequences of globally standardised time systems. The work consists of a linear arrangement of digital clocks which initially appear synchronised, but are each calibrated to the local mean solar time value of their exact position in the space. Minuscule longitudinal differences give rise to minute deviations, which coalesce in the space to form a travelling visual wave of time, making the Earth’s rotation perceptible as a continuous shift. The installation explores the historical and contemporary standardisation of time as an infrastructural system of modern societies and demonstrates how synchronisation structures perception, movement and social rhythms.
