The exhibition title refers to the power of individual phenomena. A flowering plant against a grey building façade can offer comfort, inspire hope and transform the perception of an entire place. A single wildflower, blooming despite intensively farmed fields and herbicide-treated landscapes, becomes a silent reminder of the fragile balance of our environment. At the same time, chicory, poppies and other wild plants often grow unnoticed by the wayside – not because they are invisible, but because many of us have lost our connection to them. In a present-day world characterised by an artificial overload of stimuli, our ability to perceive nature attentively and to understand it as a space for experience is increasingly fading. The exhibition also interprets these observations as a metaphor for our social interactions. Amidst indifference, a single gesture of kindness can stand out. Amongst countless works of art, one can leave a lasting impression. In the cycle of everyday life, a single moment can change everything.
Through her work, Alexandra Gschiel explores these questions using a pinhole camera. Employing a visual language reminiscent of lomography, she focuses on special moments. Deliberately imperfect in technical terms, her photographs convey impressions that give free rein to the imagination, whilst their aesthetic shifts become a medium for transmitting our perceptions. What appears to be a fleeting snapshot is in reality the result of prolonged stillness – of immersing oneself in a state of concentrated attention that could almost be called meditative. This gives rise to images that do not so much capture as reveal how the act of seeing itself takes place. Markus Wilfling focuses on the ruins of a tree. By altering its trunk, he intervenes in a natural structure, thereby revealing both the creative power and the hubris of human action.
