*It’s Yours, It’s Mine* offers an insight into the extensive body of work by the Austrian artist Mafalda Rakoš. Her projects – most of which are realised over long periods of time – focus on questions arising from a perspective on the world that is as much one of photographic documentation as it is of anthropological inquiry. The portrait serves as the recurring aesthetic and medium-specific starting point for artistic experiments that explore the possibilities of engaging in complex social discourses through photographic means. For Mafalda Rakoš, the image of the Other emerges through an expansion of perspective. Through dialogue with her protagonists and co-authors, she transcends the literary, academic and artistic tradition of first-person narration. The unfolding collaborative process brings together elements of documentary, art therapy, performance and anthropological research with the aim of placing something intangible – people’s thoughts and feelings – within an (expanded) visual framework against the backdrop of broader systemic, economic or historical contexts.
