Every autumn, the SLASH Film Festival presents the most impressive contemporary genre films from around the world as Austrian premieres. Over the course of twelve days (one more than in previous years), highlights of contemporary international genre cinema, as well as classics and rediscovered gems, will be screened at the Filmcasino, Metro Kinokulturhaus, Gartenbaukino (opening) and Schikaneder Kino (retrospective special). A particular highlight this year is the SLASH Retrospective; it ventures into uncharted territory and traces the history of North American grindhouse cinema culture. This flourished from the early 1960s onwards, particularly in New York City (42nd Street): Outside the bounds of official or legal regulations, independent exploitation cinema was screened in the so-called ‘grindhouses’ – a canvas for repressed desires and forbidden emotions, often pushing the boundaries of good taste. This year’s retrospective aims to evoke the spirit of this cinematic culture and engage it in a dialogue with contemporary sensibilities. Sixteen films will be screened, presented on 35mm film wherever possible. The entire retrospective is strictly restricted to adults only (18+); some screenings may only be attended as part of a film studies introduction.
