Gerhard Hammerl has been working at the Jugend am Werk Steiermark art studio for 35 years now. His body of work has always centred on depictions of nature; in recent years, he has developed his ‘Paradise Pictures’. These works are populated by a panoply of animals and human characters, as well as fantastical architecture. On display now are works from Gerhard Hammerl’s current creative period. His unmistakable style is evident in his delicate, meticulously constructed drawings. The creatures depicted come together to form dense visual compositions that convey a utopian vision of peace. At the Jugend am Werk Steiermark painting workshop in Graz, a rotating group of artists work intensively every day in a well-equipped communal studio. Here, each artist develops their own unique artistic expression. The spectrum ranges from small-format drawings and canvas paintings to impressive large-format, wall-filling works. This exhibition, curated by Miriam Prager, offers a fresh perspective on the work of Gerhard Hammerl.
