The photograph was taken as part of Benedek Regős’s series ‘Structure’, which explores how the invisible complexity underlying the enigmatic illusion of the photographic image surface can be articulated or represented through existing situational motifs. Whilst in architecture, scaffolding is typically erected in front of façades during renovation work, on film sets it is positioned behind the façade, thereby maintaining the illusion of the building on screen. According to the artist’s interpretation, the seemingly transparent medium of photography also conceals the structures that give rise to its own effect – a state that manifests itself in the peculiar relationship between the elements visible in the image and the manner in which the photograph was taken.
