In her first institutional solo exhibition in Austria, Torkwase Dyson transforms the ground floor of the Kunsthaus Bregenz into the setting for a room-filling architectural-sculptural intervention. Two black, sail-shaped elements divide Peter Zumthor’s foyer. These forms, which Torkwase Dyson calls ‘Hypershapes’, are rooted in the theory of Black Compositional Thought. They are an expression of the self-determined emancipation of Black people from the geography of North America, a region shaped by slavery right up to the present day. The monumental sculptures made of poplar plywood at the Kunsthaus Bregenz have been specially crafted for the exhibition in the Bregenzerwald. The second floor of the Kunsthaus Bregenz is completely darkened. A stop-motion animation and sound expand the space. Acoustics — much like architecture — is a form of spatial inscription. Sound has no clearly defined material form, yet it possesses volume, extent and direction. It flows through the space, fills empty spaces and makes the interstices tangible. On one wall, 34 small-format paintings depict the score of this soundscape. On the top floor, several large-format paintings reveal their particular intensity and luminosity in the unique daylight conditions of the Kunsthaus Bregenz.
