The ‘Oran’ photography project begins with Margot Wallard’s grandmother. Through her photographs, letters and fragments of her life, the artist returned to a place she had never known, yet which had nevertheless left a deep mark on her. As the granddaughter of a ‘Pied-Noir’ (a term used to describe the French population in Algeria during the violent French colonial rule from 1830 to 1962), Margot Wallard seeks to reflect the impermanence and fluidity of memory and to expand upon it through a new perspective. During her visits to Oran between 2018 and 2020, she explored the city with her camera and, in the course of her biographical search for traces of her past, encountered a new generation: present, complex and self-determined. This led to the creation of portrait series centred on the Bonbon Café; she photographed street scenes, urban vegetation and also the traces of the colonial past that remain unmistakable in the cityscape. In her exhibition, Margot Wallard weaves together her grandmother’s photographic archive with her own images from Algeria and with photographs she took of her grandmother during the final years of her life in France.
