Hannes Schwarz’s view of humanity, shaped by the trauma of the Nazi regime and the war, must today be understood as part of the ‘post-war’ debate. In his paintings, human beings appear traumatised or distorted by the horrors they have experienced, and torn by questions of self-worth. What might this new image of humanity look like? How might one re-conceive the ‘I’ (Sartre) in an age of mourning and psychological turmoil? The discourse on the body within art after 1945 breaks with the perverted notions of the ideal body – art as catharsis. In this exhibition curated by Günther Holler-Schuster, the work of Hannes Schwarz is juxtaposed with examples by Walter Pichler and Bruno Gironcoli. They, too – particularly in their early works – call the human body into question. The overlaps, differences and complementary aspects of the respective works reinforce the existentialist perspective on the body as an indicator of trauma.
