The intersection of film, photography and artist put into the picture!

Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen are known primarily as film theorists and filmmakers. They made enormously influential contributions to film theory, for example, with Mulvey’s Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema and Wollen’s The Two Avant-Gardes (both 1975), and made six films together between 1974 and 1983.

The exhibition at Camera Austria opens up new ways of understanding their work by focusing on Mulvey’s and Wollen’s multifaceted engagement with photography: documentaries about artists who worked with photography (e.g. Tina Modotti and Milton Rogovin); theoretical films that reflect and question the cinematographic – and thus photographic – gaze; numerous critical essays on photography and its relationship to other cultural forms; and their role as interlocutors for artists working with photography.
