In the painterly-graphic worlds of the Hungarian artist, who has lived and worked in Vienna since 1976, one encounters hybrid figures, grotesque figures and strange-looking fantasy creatures. The artist’s broad thematic palette, which includes the bizarre as well as the tragically existential, ranges from seemingly medieval atrocities to everyday banalities and humorous episodes.
There are always moments of exposure in Beresin’s works; the boundaries of shame between intimacy and publicity are strained. The artist lustfully unhinges rarely formulated and yet dominant laws of propriety. The interplay between concealing and revealing is also reflected in her pictorial programme: an oscillation between abstraction and figuration. The shadowy figures that emerge ghost-like from the background, the turmoil of animals and oversized bare feet provoke uproarious laughter from many.
