The MAK is set to become the stage for the striking installation *A Sound Map of the Danube* by New Zealand artist Annea Lockwood. She is known for her exploration of natural acoustic sounds across a wide range of media, from installations to concert music. As part of this year’s production by the MAK in collaboration with Wien Modern, her multi-channel installation – created between 2001 and 2005 – will be on display in Vienna for the first time. *A Sound Map of the Danube* traces the course of the Danube and its surroundings from its sources in the Black Forest to its estuary on the Black Sea, inviting visitors to engage with nature and its vibrant, complex soundscapes through attentive listening. Work on *A Sound Map of the Danube* (2001–2005) took Annea Lockwood over four years and 2,850 km, in around 80 stages, from Donaueschingen to the Black Sea. From Ada Kaleh, the sunken outpost of the Ottoman Empire at the Iron Gate, to memories of war in Novi Sad, to people reading newspapers whilst swimming, and tadpoles in the Danube floodplains, the installation opens up a wealth of discoveries that can be explored in an atmosphere of tranquillity.
Interwoven with the soundscape of the river are the voices of twelve people whom Annea Lockwood interviewed about the river’s significance in their lives. “They spoke to me in their native languages, so the audio material is accompanied by a booklet containing translations into German and English, as well as a large wall map showing the locations where the recordings were made. Using the wall map and a timeline, listeners can follow the course of the river,” says Annea Lockwood.
