Born into a Jewish merchant family, Irma Rafaela Toledo was only able to fulfil her dream of working as a painter after the Second World War. During the last two years of the war, she went into hiding in the mountains near Salzburg, which enabled her to survive. She produced her first paintings from 1945 onwards, working with limited resources. Taking her cue from a nickname from her youth, she eventually adopted the artist’s name ‘Toledo’. In this exhibition, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg is presenting, for the first time, over 20 paintings, drawings and prints by the Austrian artist. The exhibition brings together works from the museum’s own collections as well as selected loans, thereby showcasing the full range of her oeuvre from the early 1950s through to the 1970s: cityscapes of Salzburg, landscape paintings and still lifes, as well as works inspired by her intense engagement with spirituality and religion.
