Carpooling for the sake of the environment: To promote a return to sustainable car use, Jakob Glasner has technically modified the ignition system of his Škoda and connected the seat sensors to a fuse via an Arduino. The car will only start once the occupancy level is correct. A feature originally intended for convenience thus becomes a prerequisite for cooperation. In practice, it works like this: on the roof of the OMNICAR, an LED panel displays the current destination, turning a private route into public information. Inside the car, an illuminated sign reading ‘UNDERLOAD’ indicates that there are too few passengers. As long as the car is not sufficiently occupied, the ignition remains locked. Communication and shared travel thus become prerequisites for mobility. Having grown up in the countryside as the son of so-called ‘fossil nomads’ – his parents spent many hours in the car every day – individual mobility was not a lifestyle choice for Glasner, but a necessity. Today he lives in the city and uses a car-sharing scheme himself. OMNICAR arises from this tension between dependence and new possibilities.
The exhibition installation can be viewed for four weeks on the forecourt and in the foyer of the Kunsthaus.
