Tarek Atoui is an artist and musician. He has already performed twice in Bregenz with great success; he combines sounds from various harbour towns with characteristic objects from these places. In addition to on-site research, Atoui’s works also include historical investigations. Tarek Atoui takes the sounds of ethnic instruments from the Musikinstrumenten-Museum Berlin as a starting point to develop new instruments. He also works with electro-acoustic experiments and computer systems that connect with listeners and musicians to synthesize previously unknown sounds. Playful experimentation and musical experience take centre stage, creating a sense of the present and spontaneity. Situations that are open to the unforeseen and incorporate performative elements as an irritation are characteristic. Atoui thinks of music as changeable – it inspires and is inspired. The Kunsthaus Bregenz, with its acoustically sensitive spaces, offers Atoui’s work an ideal sounding body.
