Walter Niedermayr’s well-known series KOEXISTENZEN, a long-term photographic study, focuses on the Fleimstal, a unique valley region situated between South Tyrol and Trentino: it comprises eleven villages and has been governed for more than 900 years by its self-defined ‘Allmend’ code. This means that all land is managed collectively. The Fleimstal even has its own written constitution, which codifies this extraordinary economic system and the communal life that has grown out of it. KOEXISTENZEN is not merely an artistic study, but deals with a social reality that is also prevalent in Vorarlberg and neighbouring Switzerland: participation, linguistic and cultural integration, and self-governance. The special exhibition is curated by Christoph Doswald. He is an internationally active curator, writer and lecturer.
