In the 19 years that *this human world* has been an integral part of Vienna’s cultural landscape, our ‘human’ world has undergone fundamental change. Politically, economically and socially, we are at turning points. It is almost impossible to predict what the world we live in will look like in the future. Every day we are confronted with change – on a scale and at a pace we have never experienced before.
We are living in a time of upheaval, in which certainties are being shaken, and familiar orders are changing. Much remains uncertain; much is unsettling. This makes it all the more important to face up to these changes, to scrutinise them critically and to seek guidance together. These turning points are also reflected in this year’s film programme. Who are we? Where do we belong? What does the future hold? These are big questions that international filmmakers address with seriousness and concern, but also with humour and optimism. Their films open up new perspectives, tell stories of upheavals and new beginnings, and invite us to take a fresh look at the world and our place in it. Especially in times of upheaval, a society based on solidarity is more important than ever. Equally indispensable is a vibrant, constantly renewing awareness of the significance and history of human rights. The opening of this year’s edition of this human world will take place at the Gartenbaukino with the Austrian premiere of *Moscas-Fliegen und andere Gäste*; Fernando Eimbcke’s film, shot in atmospheric black and white, uses laconic humour and great tenderness to explore loneliness, precarious circumstances, social hardship, grief, loss and deep love. The film was the audience favourite in the competition at this year’s Berlinale.
