Line, colour, form and surface – these are the starting points for the works of concrete artists Barbara Höller, Gabi Mitterer and Peter Weber. In paintings, objects and folds, L.art VIENNA presents works from various series by the three artists from recent years in this exhibition. Barbara Höller works experimentally and conceptually in series in various media such as painting and drawing, with objects and in spatial interventions. Lines play a central role, serving as the starting point for minimalist or modular systems in the works. In her serial concrete works, she varies the arrangement of lines, using acrylic paint on paper, canvas or imitation leather.
Gabi Mitterer’s paintings, drawings and objects stand at the intersection of computer technology and art. The artist prepares fine colour gradients and precisely placed lines on the computer and then meticulously translates them into analogue form, so that the brushstrokes are barely visible. Gabi Mitterer skilfully plays with optical perceptions, colour contrasts, gradients and lines, which become geometrically constructive compositions and amorphous forms in her works. Using a wide variety of techniques and materials,
Peter Weber has developed a folding system that is always created from a single piece without any cuts through the surface. In his serial paper works made of pure white Canson watercolour paper or 640 g handmade paper, the mathematical diversity of this technique is explored to perfection. The folding works made of natural-coloured or dyed felt, which has been Weber’s dominant material since 2001, have a strong material presence. In addition to felt and paper, Weber also uses materials such as canvas, cotton, plastic and even steel.
