In her quiet, poetic tempera paintings, Erika Roessing constantly rearranges similar objects; and yet every painting is unique. Her body of work, documented in sketchbooks, comprises around 180 still lifes on canvas. Magical, lyrical, sometimes melancholic and always rigorously composed works, rendered in subdued colours, combine geometric ornamentation with motifs from ancient Italy: birds, fruit, foliage, baskets, jugs and vases. Theme and variation characterise the artist’s work. The retrospective at the Lentos Art Museum, curated by Elisabeth Nowak -Thaller at the Lentos Art Museum features around 100 paintings by the artist, who trained in Linz alongside Herbert Bayer and under Franz Zülow in Gmunden. The exhibition centres on the 1979 donation of 50 tempera paintings from the estate of the artist, who died in Vienna in 1977, by her husband Karl Rössing, the internationally renowned graphic artist and professor at the Academy. It is complemented by private loans, on display for the first time, from her early works from the Nazi era, which had long been lost. The exhibition follows Rössing’s guiding principle of “not transience, but enduring presence” and, at the same time, opens up a dialogue with selected works by Karl Rössing.
