Traditional costume is not just a piece of history, it is a living tradition and a part of home. Each generation wears its own dress, and yet there are lines of development that continue over decades and centuries. The women of Upper Austria have always been curious about new styles of dress, which they gladly adopted as long as their means allowed. However, they remained true to regional traditions, which are reflected in the details. After the end of dress codes in the mid-18th century, a distinct Upper Austrian clothing tradition was able to develop. In addition to the regional costume, a traditional costume also developed for the women of Upper Austria, which continues to this day and is now to be given a contemporary makeover. In recent months, the people of Upper Austria were asked to consider a new development of the regional costume for women in Upper Austria. The basis for the discussion was the historical diversity of women’s clothing from the 18th to 20th centuries from the collection of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum. From the 46 entries, a jury of experts selected seven exciting designs that bridge the gap between tradition and the future. Visitors are invited to choose their favourite for the ‘Upper Austrian woman.Dirndl.Dress’.
