With its current exhibition, the MAK is dedicating its first solo show to the award-winning Austrian textile artist Ursi Fürtler. Her work is characterised by a preference for pleated fabrics on the one hand and geometric patterns on the other, which testify to her intensive engagement with the artistic canon and the arts and crafts of classical modernism – from the Wiener Werkstätte to the Bauhaus. Her fascination with Japanese printing and dyeing techniques is particularly evident in her consistent use of three different screen printing stencils, which work with dots and stripes and, in their combinations, create complex, multi-layered patterns. The exhibition presents a cross-section of her entire oeuvre, from textile designs on paper from the 1970s and 1980s to foldable screens and textiles that blur the line between sculptural objects and wearable garments.
