After the end of the Second World War, Styria was left severely scarred by bombed-out towns and a destroyed infrastructure. The economy was in ruins. Furthermore, by mid-1946, over 80,000 non-Austrians were still in the country as war refugees, more than 17,000 of whom were housed in mass accommodation. Without sufficient international aid, there was a threat of general collapse and famine. Taking a broad view of humanitarian aid, this exhibition aims to raise questions that go beyond an analysis of the motives and achievements of the NGOs involved, addressing the links between state and non-state programmes as well as the relationship between occupation policy and humanitarian engagement. The exhibition After the War – curated by Heribert Macher-Kroisenbrunner – is dedicated to a chapter of Austrian-Styrian contemporary history that is highly relevant in light of current violent conflicts and problems in the world.
