The first solo museum exhibition by the Georgian artist Tolia Astakhishvili takes the ‘figure of the child’ as its starting point. In this context, the child represents a being of great intellectual and creative autonomy who is, at the same time, heavily dependent on other people. This concept serves as an exercise in imagination that explores the potential and limits of empathy – drawing on the shared experience that we were all once children ourselves. In terms of spatial environment, scale and precariousness, the figure of the child embodies a state of being in which invisibility is often experienced with full force. Accordingly, in the exhibition, Tolia Astakhishvili focuses her attention on the experience of art itself, which unfolds through movement and touch and consciously breaks away from the conventions of museum presentation. The idea of the ‘first encounter’, as children experience it in their initial encounter with a phenomenon, forms the key to a new way of experiencing.
