There is no escaping so-called ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI). It permeates our lives deeply, influencing how we see, perceive and understand the world. AI can benefit us, but it can also co-opt, manipulate and exploit us. A critical eye is required. Art can help us in this regard. Hence, the exhibition ‘Threats and Promises’. Here, art functions as a framework, a mirror, a playing field and an early-warning system. The focus is on themes such as man and machine, the body and data, the public sphere and authorship, history and interconnections, as well as the ambivalence between fascination, ideology and power. The participating artists explore questions of bias, surveillance, control, ethics, delegation, participation and imagination, examining both the opportunities and the risks of algorithmic systems.
