FOTO ARSENAL WIEN is transforming the Amalienbad into an exhibition space to mark its 100th anniversary. Inside the building and on the forecourt, around 50 images interweave its history with photographs by Rathmayr. Combined with historical archive material, this creates a multi-layered reflection on the swimming pool at Reumannplatz, its neighbourhood and ‘Red Vienna’. Opened on 8 July 1926, the baths were considered at the time to be the most modern and luxurious indoor swimming pool in Europe. It was conceived as a place of social equality, designed to provide access to hygiene, leisure and health across class boundaries. Michael Rathmayr highlights the significance of the swimming pool as an architectural monument to ‘Red Vienna’ – and as the vibrant social organism that it remains to this day. He has produced detailed studies of the building’s Art Deco elements, portraits of its current users and research into its origins. The images of the swimming pools, architectural details, main rooms and back rooms explore the building’s current state. Rathmayr combines these with findings from his research in the district and city archives. The result is a panorama that links historical insights with the present-day lives of swimmers and athletes.
