In her paintings and photographic collages, the Canadian artist Julie Beugin explores how abstraction can enter into a dialogue with the everyday. Taking photographic fragments of everyday urban architecture as her starting point, Beugin captures the cinematic dynamism of fleeting impressions as she roams the city. During her stay in Vienna, Beugin will engage intensively with Vienna’s municipal housing estates – a form of social housing architecture whose history spans from the historic buildings of ‘Red Vienna’ in the 1920s to contemporary structures. Through an analytical examination of the architecture that defines Vienna’s history of affordable housing and community life, she explores concepts of urban belonging. Her artistic research is based on extensive walks and the photographic documentation of gardens, courtyards and passageways. For her exhibition, Beugin engages with the specific architecture of the Bildraum Studio, weaving together shifting architectural perspectives within the space through painting and photographic collage installations.
