What intuition and instinct are to humans, code is to machines. In her works, which straddle the fields of painting, projection and photography, Janine Weger pits visual coincidences against the logic of algorithmic visual worlds. ‘Projection Field’ (2025) and ‘A Creator of Epic Pictures’ (2025) superimpose gesture, projection, archive images and digital manipulation; a new experimental photo series (2026) extends this perspective into fragile, barely tangible pictorial spaces. What appears to be a surface becomes a field of shifts: light refracts, colours shift, and bodies and space lose their distinct contours. Material processes and digital systems converge, demonstrating that seeing does not equate to knowing. Against the backdrop of this year’s Ars Electronica Festival theme, ‘Future Begins – Negotiating Humanity’, an image space emerges in which human perception is not replaced, but is experienced as an uncertain, intuitive and vulnerable form of cognition.
