What we take for granted today is by no means a given: democracy; it was forged over centuries and must be defended once again, particularly today. The uprisings by Salzburg’s miners and peasants in 1525 and 1526, known as the Salzburg Peasants’ War, were an attempt by the civilian population to rebel against the religious and secular dominance of Cardinal-Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg. To mark the commemoration of ‘500 Years of the Peasants’ War’, WHEN IF NOT NOW explores the urgency of taking action today, social engagement, moral courage and the defence of democracy. In uprisings or marches, flags serve as a means of orientation, a declaration of belonging and a way of communicating demands, and are usually associated with masculinity. The ‘Plaisir-Plissée Flag’, which Barbara Holub designed in collaboration with participants during three workshops, instead embodies a feminine and diverse spirit. Following the performative procession and the raising of the flag, residents and visitors are invited to swap the fabric ribbons attached to the flag. These feature written contributions on how to foster JOY as a foundation for collective engagement, in order to counteract the sense of powerlessness felt in these politically challenging times.
