The exhibition focuses on the drawings of the Styrian architect Peter Hellweger (1941–2011). Hellweger used architectural drawings as tools for thought, to explore the world and to design in dialogue with it. His architectural drawings enabled Hellweger, as the central means of expression in his designs, to define the architectural mode of ‘thinking through building’: a visual understanding of the existing, which directly gives space to the world of the imagination and its projections. Analysis, argument and design are inseparable in his work; for him, they constitute merely different levels of the same reflexive practices in architectural drawing. The exhibition invites visitors to perceive architectural drawings as forms of thought. On display are projects from Hellweger’s student days at Graz University of Technology, as well as works from his collaboration with Günther Domenig’s architectural practice, and plans, sketches and collages from his independent architectural practice.
