Nicéphore Niépce’s ‘View from the Study at Le Gras’ from 1826 is regarded as the oldest surviving photograph and serves as an iconic metaphor for the functionality inherent in the new medium – visually capturing the outside world through a seemingly objective apparatus, thereby making it comprehensible in a new way. FOTOHOF is celebrating the milestone anniversary of ‘200 Years of Photography’ with an exhibition that, with a touch of curiosity and a twinkle in the eye, offers a glimpse into the studios of Salzburg-based photographers: the exhibition concept is based on an invitation to identify the earliest work in one’s own body of work – as defined by the artist – and to make it available for the exhibition, either as a vintage print or as a reconstruction. The curatorial concept is based on the assumption that this will make the most diverse approaches and concepts for a later body of work that developed from them visible and open to discussion. The number of participants determines the form of the presentation – the 19th-century ‘Salon de Paris’ – an excessive concentration, both spatially and in terms of content, of the most diverse characters and formal concepts. 2026 also marks the 45th anniversary of FOTOHOF, which has thus accompanied almost a quarter of the time that has elapsed since the invention of the medium.
