With The Times of Nature, the Kunsthistorisches Museum presents masterpieces by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Jacopo and Leandro Bassano as well as numerous other 16th century artists. In addition to paintings, sculptures and tapestries, clocks, globes, scientific instruments and calendars are displayed alongside precious manuscripts and printed works. They all illustrate how man orientates himself in the world and finds his place in it. Leandro Bassano’s fascinating series of Vienna Monthly Pictures occupies a central position. These large-format paintings surprise and delight us with depictions of rolling, hilly landscapes, animals, fruit and all manner of agricultural implements and activities. They also offer unique insights into everyday life in the territories of the Republic of Venice during the Renaissance. The exhibition, curated by Francesca Del Torre Scheuch, features around one hundred works of art. In addition to works from the rich holdings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s collections, selected paintings, drawings and manuscripts from international museums and other Viennese institutions are on display.
