The HDA is being transformed into an open laboratory by two architectural collectives – asphalt and circa. Combining documentation, archiving and spatial staging, they create a shared space for thought and discourse that highlights their interest in dealing with the existing built environment and in establishing a new culture of conservation. Drawing on precise field research into routines, material flows, traces and infrastructure, they open up two complementary perspectives on new narratives of construction and renovation in urban and rural areas.
The collective asphalt investigates municipal building yards and waste collection points in rural areas. As often-overlooked everyday infrastructures, they represent spaces that straddle the realms of emergency, logistics and poetry. Through multimedia portraits, the potential of these low-threshold and publicly accessible infrastructures for a practice of reuse is brought to light. As part of the laboratory, asphalt develops cartographic mappings of the building yards, which allow their spatial structures to be compared and identified as a specific typology.
The collective circa. focuses on those often-overlooked spaces in the city that form the shared infrastructure of our everyday lives – transitions, residual spaces and places taken for granted. These ‘infraordinary’ environments shape social and spatial experiences quietly and sustainably. circa. regards the precise observation, analysis and representation of these structures as an act of recognition, creating a foundation for care, further reflection and preservation.
At the Haus der Architektur, the approaches and working methods of both collectives are brought together in an open laboratory and made immediately accessible. What is on display is not a finished exhibition, but a discourse in the making, one that is constantly evolving and deepening.
