The ALBERTINA’s collection comprises over a million objects and ranks among the world’s most significant collections of prints and drawings. This year it celebrates its 250th anniversary. As is well known, the foundation stone was laid in 1776 by Albert of Saxony-Teschen. For the first time, the exhibition also highlights the female contribution to this world-famous collection. It focuses on Marie Christine, Maria Theresa’s favourite daughter, and shows how she and her husband Albert systematically built up the collection. The exhibition explores the origins of the ALBERTINA and the respective motivations of the collectors. What profile was to be developed, and for what purpose was the collection assembled? Which artists were favoured? When did the major collections of works by Albrecht Dürer or Egon Schiele come into the museum’s possession? These and other questions are answered using valuable examples such as Dürer’s Hare. In doing so, the focus is not only on a great history, but also on the future.
