The Tyrolean-born artist Ernst Caramelle is one of the defining voices of Austrian conceptual art. In his multifaceted body of work, the focus is not on the object but on the idea – which manifests itself in various media: as a drawing, wall installation, video or artist’s book. The student exhibition – curated by Jürgen Tabor – focuses on this ongoing engagement with the medium of the book and juxtaposes it with Caramelle’s early photo series Video Landscapes (1974). In this series, video images are integrated into the space in such a way that they merge with their surroundings – blurring the boundary between media construction and physical reality. Both groups of works address central questions concerning perception, image production and media representation – at the intersection of idea, medium and reality.
An accompanying reading and media lounge invites visitors to engage with the works in greater depth. It offers selected literature from the libraries of the museum and the Generali Foundation for all exhibitions at the venue, as well as access to the media library containing around 500 films and videos.
