The second exhibition of the Collection of Contemporary Art and Religion in the newly refurbished KULTUMUSEUM brings together around 100 works exploring religion in contemporary art from a wide variety of perspectives, featuring works by some 40 artists from across Europe. The increasingly pressing issue of fundamentalism, with its tendency towards covert violence, is addressed here, as are images of stillness, transcendence and the proximity of the divine in their most diverse manifestations – ranging from vision, presence and the energy of the image to an exploration of the limits of life in the context of illness and death. The exhibition also explores how codes of Christianity are interpreted within a contemporary visual landscape – as a creative engagement with its legacy, and as an examination of its relevance today, at a time when its significance is widely perceived to be waning.
Works by Iris Christine Aue, Fritz Bergler, Anna & Bernhard Blume, Julia Bornefeld, Guillaume Bruère, Danica Dakić, Michael Endlicher, Manfred Erjautz, Lorenz Estermann, Heribert Friedl, Hermann Glettler, Reinhild Gerum, Dorothee Golz, G.R.A.M., Peggy and Thomas Henke, Bertram Hasenauer, Werner Hofmeister, Jochen Höller, Lena Knilli, Zenita Komad, Nina Kovacheva, Zlatko Kopljar, Julia Krahn, Paul Albert Leitner, Gerhard Lojen, Muntean/Rosenblum, Alois Neuhold, ninavale, Adrian Paci, Hannes Priesch, Werner Reiterer, Bettina Rheims / Serge Bramly, Keiko Sadakane, Claudia Schink, Ruth Schnell, Nina Schuiki, Petra Sterry, Michael Triegel, Lidwien van de Ven, Mark Wallinger, Markus Wilfling, Eduard Winklhofer, Maaria Wirkkala, Daphna Weinstein, Daniel A.
