To mark the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Austria Vancouver Club in Richmond, BC, is hosting the exhibition ‘Leopold Stastny – Survivor, Visionary, Legendary Football Manager & Immigrant in Canada’. As manager of the Austrian national team from 1968 to 1975, Leopold Stastny laid the foundations for the subsequent success of Austrian football. Less well known is the fact that, as a Jew in Slovakia, he was persecuted during the Nazi era and arrested under the communist regime. In 1980, he emigrated to Canada, where he died in Toronto in 1996. The exhibition is based on a production by the Museum of Jewish Culture at the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava. Over the coming months, it will be shown at several venues across Canada to honour Stastny’s extraordinary life, which spanned Bratislava, Innsbruck, Vienna and Canada.
